Cleaners to Avoid:
For starters, there are several substances to be avoided at all costs. Bleach and hydrogen peroxide, for example, can do damage to your upholstery. Another group to avoid are any cleaners with an ammonia base. These can damage your touch screens by removing anti-fingerprint and anti-glare coatings. Moreover, don't use anything abrasive when cleaning a touchscreen device, including tissues or paper towels. Finally, don't treat all surfaces the same.
What You Should Do to Clean for Covid-19?
Always Wear Gloves
First, use gloves when disinfecting and cleaning your car. The Centers for Disease Control suggests the following:
"Gloves and any other disposable PPE used for cleaning and disinfecting the vehicle should be removed and disposed of after cleaning; wash hands immediately after removal of gloves and PPE with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available."cdc.gov
Try Alcohol-Based Cleaners
The Centers for Disease Control recommends using alcohol-based solutions with at least 70% alcohol is most effective. Alcohol not only kills Coronavirus, but it is car friendly. Just be sure to keep it away from the leather. Most leather seats have a protective layer, but if you don't know the specifications, it's much better to be safe rather than sorry.
A Soap & Water Solution
Another great option which works on most surfaces, including leather seats, is a basic solution of water and soap. Just try not to scrub too aggressively, or get the fabrics too damp.
Microfiber Towels or 100% Cotton T-Shirts
Generally speaking, old cotton t-shirts and/or microfiber towels are a useful solution that can be applied almost anywhere.
A Word About Leather Seats and Surfaces
Notwithstanding that we've mentioned leather several times above, it bears repeating again. Avoid hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, bleach, and ammonia-based cleaners. Leather-specific disinfecting wipes are ideal, but applying water and soap with a damp cloth will likely do the trick.
Ideally, the best solution to stop community spread of Coronavirus is to stay home and not share a vehicle. If you must share a car, however, drive a rental, get your car serviced, or transport others, then regular cleaning is the most effective way to ensure the safety of yourself and others.
